  •  Identify the various race and caste problems that the film depicts. How timely are those problems? Do they persist today, and to what extent?

  • Is Louise a sympathetic or unsympathetic character? Or is she both? And how?

  • Is Alvin a victim of Louise’s intrigues? Or is he culpable for his actions and deserving of the situation in which he finds himself?

  • The Scar of Shame uses numerous symbols and recurring motifs. Choose one or two of them, and discuss their effectiveness.

  • What is the importance of Louise’s baby doll? What does it reveal about the relationship between Louise and Alvin?

  • Houses and interior settings are used as markers of status and achievement. Compare and contrast the different settings, such as Mrs. Green’s boarding house and Mrs. Hillyard’s home.
